Carlton Academy's corridors, staircases and toilets had been coated with varnish - a product that, while durable, presents a significant practical problem over time: it cannot be touched up cleanly. Any attempt to patch a marked or damaged area leaves a visible difference in sheen and tone, meaning that routine maintenance gradually makes the finish look worse rather than better.
The solution was to strip the varnish back entirely and redecorate from scratch - giving the school corridors, staircases and toilet areas a clean, consistent finish that can be properly maintained going forward. The work was timed for Easter 2026 to allow completion before summer, when flooring and M&E contractors would need access to the same areas.
Stripping varnish back entirely and redecorating a school from scratch, in half-term

Varnish products cannot simply be painted over. Without the correct preparation, new paint will not adhere properly and the finish will fail prematurely. The removal process requires a specific primer to be applied before any decoration can begin - adding a preparation stage that is easy to skip but critical to the longevity of the finished result.
The project was also time-sensitive. With other trades scheduled to follow immediately after Easter, there was no flexibility in the programme. The work had to be planned precisely and delivered on time to avoid knocking subsequent contractors off their schedules.
Surfaces were treated with the correct specialist primer following varnish preparation - a step that required care and drying time before decoration could begin. Once the primer was down and cured, the team worked through the corridors, staircases and toilets systematically, applying a durable finish suited to a high-traffic school environment.
Programme management was built into the approach from the outset, with the sequencing of prep, priming and decoration planned to ensure the Easter deadline was met without compromising the quality of the work.
The project delivered a clean, consistent finish across all treated areas - and resolved the long-running maintenance problem that the varnish had created. With a properly specified and applied decoration scheme in place, the school can now carry out routine touch-ups without the aesthetic inconsistency that had made maintenance difficult. Completion within the Easter window kept the wider contractor programme on track.
