GME Group is proud to Support the Great Yorkshire Build – Hilltop School, Rotherham
This week marked a significant milestone as contractors from across Yorkshire came together to officially break ground on the £3 million transformation of Hilltop School in Rotherham—an initiative that GME Group is honoured to be part of.
Spearheaded by Yorkshire Children’s Charity through their inspiring Great Yorkshire Build campaign, this ambitious project will completely reconfigure the school to meet the urgent needs of 180 pupils with complex learning difficulties. As one of over 50 contractors, consultants, and developers volunteering our time, resources, and expertise, GME Group is proud to be playing a hands-on role in delivering spaces that these children truly deserve.
The transformation includes the creation of three new purpose-built classrooms, a rebound therapy centre, and a range of accessible, dignified learning and care facilities. This isn’t just a refurbishment—it’s a lifeline for students and staff who have, until now, worked and learned in unsuitable and inadequate conditions. Many children have been taught in cramped, temporary cabins with no natural light, running water, or toilet access—circumstances brought to national attention through the BBC’s SEND Help programme.
At GME, we believe that every child has the right to learn, play, and thrive in a safe, well-equipped environment—not because it’s a privilege, but because it’s a basic human right. That’s why it was such a clear ‘yes’ for us when asked to be part of this collaborative build. As a business that works extensively across education, housing, and community projects, we understand how critical spaces like Hilltop are for the wellbeing and development of young people with additional needs.
This initiative speaks directly to our values—not just as a group, but as advocates for meaningful, long-term social impact. Being on site for the ground-breaking event was an emotional and inspiring moment for all involved. Hearing from parents like Kirstie, who shared how much this project will change children’s lives—children who are asking not for luxuries, but for daylight and dignity—was a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
“It’s going to benefit so many kids. They’re asking for the most basic things... daylight, windows, running water. Children shouldn’t have to ask for it—it’s their human right.” — Kirstie, Parent at Hilltop School
We’re proud to be part of a regional movement of construction professionals stepping up to make a real difference where it's needed most. The Great Yorkshire Build is more than a project—it’s a legacy. And GME Group is committed to seeing it through with care, quality, and community at the forefront.
