Wakefield Continues to Grow

30th January 2018

Amongst fierce competitors, Wakefield has come out within the top 10 of the UK’s fastest growing economies. In a study that compared growth in economy and employment in 45 of the UK’s largest cities, Rotherham and Hull also lead the way for Yorkshire, ranking 8th and 9th respectively.

The city has also seen a rise of 0.9% of those in employment in comparison with the previous year, pushing Wakefield even higher on the scale for employment.

Investment in projects such as Trinity Walk and the planned refurbishment of the Ridings Shopping centre are sure to have made an impact on improving the prosperity of Wakefield and attracting more people to the city.

Local proximity to amenities such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and the National Coal Mining Museum in addition to the fantastic railway links would also have been contributors to the reported growth. The UK Powerhouse Study, which was carried out by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, stated that growth had increased by 1.7% altogether year on year. in addition to this, the GVA (Gross Value Added) was calculated to have been £6.5bn for the third quarter of last year, therefore placing Wakefield as the tenth fastest growing economy in the country, flying the flag with other Yorkshire cities.
